Determination of Trace Elements in Human Bones from Sanxia and Lower Areas of Yangzi River and Their Relationship with Paleodiet

Huang Yao~*1 , Zhang Zhaojian1, Huang Yufang1, Wang Yihua2, Chen Chun2 (National Microanalysis Center1, Department of Cultural Relics and Museology2, Fudan University, Shanghai 200433)
Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to detect trace elements in ancient human bones from Sanxia and lower areas of Yangzi river. The results show that ICP-MS is a powerful technology in the analysis of bone chemistry. Compared with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), ICP-MS is much more sensitivity. The limit of detection to elements in solution can be up to ng/L level. And the method can accurately detect both of high concentration elements and low concentration elements at the same time. Using Zn, Sr, Ba, Ca as indicators, some paleodietary information were obtained from the ~analytical results.
