Preparation of Reduced Symmetrical SiO_2/Ag Core-Shell Nanoparticles and Their Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering Activities

The silver nanocaps were fabricated with a general chemical reductive strategy by depositing silver films onto the self-assembled monolayer arrays of SiO2 nanoparticles. The surface morphologies, structure and optical properties were characterized using TEM, SEM, XRD and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The surfaces of the nanocaps are not smooth, being characterized by numerous small silver grains. The absorption spectrum of silver nanocaps with a 350-nm diameter silica core exhibits two peaks around 382 and 689 nm. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activities of these nanostructures with 350 nm and 450 nm diameter silica core were investigated using methylene blue (MB) as probe molecule, and the enhancement factor were stimatedto be 3.6×109 and 3.9×109, respectively. The results indicate that these silver nanostructures are good SERS active substrates.
