Controlled Synthesis of 2-Hydroxypropyltrimethyl Ammonium Chloride Chitosan

2-Hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosans (HACC) were prepared using chitosan and 2, 3-epoxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride. Structure and molecular weights (Mw) were characterized by gel permeation chromatography(GPC), infrared spectrum(IR) and ~(13)C NMR. Effect of reaction conditions on the structure of HACC was studied. The results show that the higher the molecular weight and degree of deacetylation of chitosan are, the higher the degree of quaternization of chitosan. High temperature and prolonging reaction time increase the degree of quaternization of chitosan. 2-Hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan with degree of quaternization 15%～90%, molecular weight 1～100×10~4 can be obtained by controlling the reaction temperature at 30～90℃, reaction time in 3～10 hours, and the ratio of 2,3-epoxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride and chitosan at 1: 1～4:1.
