The vertical profiles of trace elements including rare earth elements(REEs) in the two typical sediment cores of Honghu Lake wetland were investigated using ICP-MS.The vertical profiles of trace elements in different clusters were different and the enriched horizons of elements had an obvious variation. These results indicated that the enrichment of trace element in the sediment cores is related to the sedimentary environment. The trace elements in S1 core which directly suffered from the current and exchange of the Yangtze River had enriched nearer to surface layer than those in S2 core. The similar chondrite-normalized curve of rare earth elements demonstrated that the two sediment cores had the same material source and different sedimentary environment. The vertical profiles of trace elements in the sediment cores have recorded the impacts of industry, fishery and agriculture on ecology and environment of the Honghu Lake wetland.
