Synthesis and studies on fluorimetric quenching reaction between beryllium and spectrofluorimetric reagent salicylaldehyde-hydrazinecarbothioamide

A fluorescent reagent salicylaldehyde hydrazinecarbothioamide was synthesized. This reagent exhibited a fluorescent excitation and emission maxima at 385 nm and 485 nm, respectively. In the pH 9.3 buffer solution, this reagent formed complexes with beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium, respectively, and caused its fluorescence quenching. The less the ionic radium of alkali earth metals, the greater their fluorescence quenching intensities. Based on this, a new method for determination of beryllium was proposed. The linear range of the method was from 0.0 to 32 μg/L of Be with detection limit of 0.25 μg/L. The relative standard deviation was 1.6%. Interferences of other ions were studied. The method was successfully applied to the determination of beryllium in human′s hair and mineral water with recoveries of 98.9 % and 107 %, respectively.
