Normalizations in the Construction of AGM CEO Speech Discourse

JIANG Xia(Foreign Language School of Central China Normal University,Wuhan 430079,China)
According to Halliday, the use of language in different contexts or situations is determined by three variables: Field,Tenor and Model. Thus, people's choice of a congruent or metaphorical form may be sensitive to these three variables in the use of language.Normalization,as a major form of metaphor, largely exists in any abstract written discourse.Nominalizations mainly serve as an important means for conveying the information with the superficial nature of objectivity and neutrality and establishing the credibility and authority of the speakers.Another important function in the construction of discourse is to perform a powerful cohesive function in the discourse and achieve a particular organization in the text. This paper, based upon the systematic functional grammar, has presented a detailed study on the function of normalizations in the construction of AGM(Annual General Meeting) CEO speeches with the purpose to demonstrate that the rational use of normalizations may facilitate the construction and communication of PPS(Prepared Public Speech) discourse.
