Mass culture of hairy roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza was firstly done with a 10 liter ball type airlift bioteactor. The growth rate and tanshinone content of the 50-day-old hairy roots obtained from 10 liter ball type airlift bioteactor were 241.71 and 0.11 percent of dry weight respectively, while the growth rate and tanshinone content of the hairy roots obtained from the flask was 203.33 and 0.16 percent of dry weight respectively. Further pilot scale cultivation was done with a 75 liter airlift bioreactor. The yield of protocatechualdehyde and salvianolic acid-B of the 50-day-old hairy roots from the 75 liter airlift bioteactor was very close to the yield of protocatechualdehyde and salvianolic acid-B of the hairy roots with same age from the 10 liter ball type airlift bioteactor. These results showed that airlift bioreactor is suitable for mass cultivation of hairy roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza and the large scale production of the hairy roots with bioreactor will be a new way for sustainable utilization of the resources of Salvia miltiorrhiza.
