Novel Approaches to Utilize Crop Heterosis Based on Plastid Transformation

Spontaneous genic male sterility would be idea genetic element for utilizing crop heterosis, which could meet the demand of idea steriler breeding. It is the best solution to use the heterosis if only the problem of steriler mutiplication could be solved. In this paper, we have suggestions to obtain the effective pathways to utilize spontaneous genic male sterile lines or transgenic male sterile lines by means of plastid transformation. (1) Introducing a male fertile gene into the plastid genome of a male sterile line to suppress the male sterile gene expression. The transgenic male fertile line could be used as the maintainer to multiply the male sterile line. (2) Introducing TA29-barnase into the plastid genome of a conventional variety to produce male sterile line. Any conventional variety might be used as the maintainer to multiply the transgenic male sterile line. Transgenic TA29-barstar variety might be used as the restorer for producing hybrid seed or conventional varieties used as the paternal parents for producing hybrid seed of vegestable harvest purpose. Two novel approaches could make three line system which would be the full solutions to utilize of plant heterosis.
