Progresses of Research on Plant High-Affinity K~+ Transporter (HKT)

HKT transporter, namely high-affinity K+ transporter, is a kind of Na+ or K+ transporter or Na+-K+ co-transporter which relates to plant salt-tolerance. This family can be divided into two subfamilies based on the fact that HKT protein have different construction and function. The most important functional region of subfamily 1 comprises Serine which is a specific Na+ transporter, while that of subfamily 2 comprises Glycine which is Na+-K+ co-transporter or Na+/K+ uni-transporter. The function of HKT varies with genes, plants and environment. Recent researches and progresses of HKT have been summarized in this article, which involves the naming of HKT family, subfamily classification, homology analysis and expression sites. Study HKT family is of great signif- icance for the improvement crop K+ utilization and reduction of salinity hazard.
