EFFECT OF BORON ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF HIGH STRENGTH SPRING STEEL

The effect of different amount (0.0006 %~0.0027 %) of boron on mechanical properties of high strength spring steel was investigated. The results show that the addition of boron can remarkably increase the hardenability of the steels tested. The difference of the hardenability for steels with different amount of boron is not significant. With the increase of boron content, the toughness of the steel increases significantly, though there is little decrease of its strength.The hysteresis loop area measured in torsional Bauschinger tests, which is much closely related with the sag resistance,increases with the increase of boron content at the same hardness level.
