The curative effect of aloe on constipation and its primary mechanism

Objective To observe the curative effect of aloe on constipation and investigate the effects of aloe on peristalsis and water reabsorption of the intestine. Methods We observed the time of discharging the first red stool, character and dry weight in the stool and the propulsion rate of intestines in mice after feeding with the fluid of aloe DC constipation model. Results In the high and moderate concentration group, thetime of discharging the first red stool was (200.8±19.4)min and (229.3±7.5)min,wnich were shorten compared with the negative control group(253.8±23.2)min(P0.05) . The high concentration group was of higher effect. The dry weight of stool of the high and moderate concentration group were (45.0±8.5)mg and (33.0±9.5)mg,significantly more compared with the negative control group (16.5±9.3)mg(P0.05). The number of wet stool increased, compared with positive control group(P0.05). The propulsion rate of the intestines of the high and moderate low concentration group was(93.7±4.0)%, (86.5±9.5)% and (80.4±13.4)%, significantly higher than the control group(69.0±8.4)%(P0.05). Conclusion Aloe can enhance the peristalsis of small intestine and reduce the reabsorption of water in bowel wall. These effect is mild and can be used for treatment of constipation.
