GU Xiao yun (Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing 100080)  
In review of the development of marine engineering geology, the types, methods, and contents of the offshore site investigation are described in this paper. Several problems, such as seafloor stability, liquefaction potential of sandy soil, and in situ geotechnical tests, are presented in more details. Finally, the prospects of marine engineering geology in the 21 century are given.
