Practical Determination of Shear Strength Parameters of Discontinuities in Rock Slope

For middle tosmall rock slopes,the shear strength parameters of discontinuities come mainly from the codes and the engineering experiences due to the limits of technique and cost,therefore,the reinforcement of slopes can hardly meet the requirements of both safety and economy.This paper studies the respective actions of shear strength parameters,cohesion c and internal friction angle ,of control discontinuities for 15~30m high rock slopes.The results show that when the height of slope is lower than 25m,the value of c is the main control factor of the stability for rock slope.So it is proposed to adopt the field anti-slice test to confirm the value of c and then confirm the value of  according to the codes.This method is more available to engineering practice because it obtains the main parameters by field measurements while overcomes the disadvantage of large field shear test that costs more time and money.It is an economical and practical method for determining shear strength parameters of discontinuities.
