The accurate modeling of cable behavior is of vital importance in the analysis anddesign of cable-supported stFUctures. In this paper, an itCfative approach of forming the cableelement stiffness matrix from the basic catenny relationships was introduced. Meanwhile, anefficient iterative scheme that calculates the elemental free length based on a linear searchalgorithm was also proposed for a cable element with given tension, which allows efficientcalculation of cable StrUc'tUres with different initial conditions. The vibration equations for smalloscillation about nonlinear equilibrium were derived. One application to the famous Tsing Malong span cable suspended bridge was presented, in which the free vibration analyses of both thelocal cable and the whole tower-cable system as a cable-beam compounded structUre werecarried out and compared with the in situ measurement.
