HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT AND FLOW CHARACTERISTICS OF A SURFACE WITH DISCRETE RIBS

Detailed maps of heat transfer coefficients and flow structures have been measured for turbulent flow in a converging square channel with discrete ribs and combination of discrete ribs with grooves) respectively. Average heat transfer enhancement factors of 3 to 4 and 2.5to 3.2 have been achieved for both cases. The flow patterns around ribs are observed by visualization. Distributions of heat transfer coefficients agree well with flow field near ribroughened walls. Augmentation of heat transfer in the channel can be attribute to complex secondary flow induced by the inclined discrete ribs.
