Study of a wide area protection system based on “three defensive lines” and its criterion

LIU Bing(Guangzhou Zhiguang Electric Ltd., Guangzhou 510640, China)  
A wide area protection system (WAPS) based on the “three defensive lines”, as defined in relevant standard for power system stability control, is proposed to meet the operation safety and reliability requirements of large-scale interconnected power grid and to prevent the occurrence of cascading trips and outages. This WAPS can obtain wide area operation information of power system via power communication network to implement different protection and control functions according to various operation statuses. These defensive lines in WAPS will operate harmoniously and cooperate with each other instead of operating independently. It is possible to study protection and control criteria with superior functions and performances by obtaining wide area operation information of power system. A wide area relay protection criterion based on the relationship factor and the action factor of protection intelligent electronic device (IED) is proposed. Case study shows that this protection criterion can locate faults rapidly and exactly, and can overcome the drawbacks of long operation time delay and large fault-affected regions as brought by the maloperation of protection IED, thus greatly enhancing the operation security and reliability of large-scale interconnected power grid.
