Fluorescence spectra of methanol solution and its characteristic

Experimental study on fluorescent spectral properties of methanol solutions with different concentrations excited by different wavelength UV light is carried out. The applied measuring system is SP-2558 multi-functional spectral measuring system and different wavelength UV light is obtained by exciting spectrometer with Xe lamp. The results show that a stronger fluorescence can be generated when methanol solution is excited by UV light with a wavelength of 220nm. The fluorescence spectrum is within a range from 310nm to 370nm. Peak wavelength of the fluorescence is about 337nm and red shift will be generated by increasing the exciting wavelength. Excited by a same UV light, fluorescent intensity will be strengthened first and then weakened with the increase of methanol solution concentration. According to the principle of molecular spectroscopy, through analyzing, it has concluded that the fluorescence is generated by the transition of lone-pair electrons in –OH group in methanol molecule and the above property of the fluorescent spectrum is determined by electrons transition. The research results provide the basis for using methanol as common solvent and important organic chemical industrial chemicals.
