Synthesis and Characterization of ZnO Nanocrystallites at Room Temperature

ZnO nanocrystallites were prepared by direct precipitation method using Zn(AC)2, ZnCl2 and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as reagents at room temperature. As-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). XRD results showed that the nanocrystals have wurtzite (hexagonal) structure with good crystallinity. TEM photograph indicated that the as-preppared ZnO nanocrystllites with the average diameter of 6~10nm dispersed well. The UV-vis results showed that the ZnO nanocrystallites had a exceedingly strong absorption at UV light wavelength of 200~380 nm and weak absorption at visible light wavelength of 400~800 nm. Under excitation of monochromatic light of wavelength 340 nm, PL mainly showed two blue emission band peaks at 424 nm and 470 nm, and green emission band at 550 nm.
