Current research progress and Prospect of super rice in Guangdong province

CHEN You-ding (Rice Research Institute, Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Guangzhou 510640,China)  
The history and progress in super-rice breeding or super high-yield production both in China and abroad were briefly reviewed in this paper. Ten super-rice or super-rice-like varieties (combinations) matching the super-rice or super-rice-like criteria have been bred and released for demonstration and extension. Two theoretical models, namely, 'semi-dwarf, early growth and deep root' model for super-rice and 'dynamic plant type' model for double-season super-rice, for South China have been established preliminarily. Further efforts on super-rice breeding and relating work in Guangdong province should aim to: improving grain quality and comprehensive tolerance; strengthening research and extension of cultivation techniques for super high-yielding; improving the methodology for regional trials of super-rice varieties (combinations); and enhancing the extension of super-rcie. 
