Effect of Acid and Inacid Root Conditioning Agents on Root Surfaces.Ⅰ Ultrastructure Observation.

Objective The purpose of the study was to compare the effect on root surfaces after etching with neutral or low pH agents in human teeth. Methods Health teeth and peridontitis affected teeth were chosed. The root cementum surfaces or dentin surfaces after scaling and planing were etched with citric acids (pH 1)、tetracycline HCL(pH 2) or 24% EDTA respectively and then examined by scanning electron microscope. Results Both two kinds of agents could remove the smear layer and superial hypermineralized layer and expose collagen fibers. But acid agents seemed to erode the fibers to varing degrees. EDTA could selectivly expose collagen fibers. Conclusion It indicated that EDTA could profoundly protect root collagen fibers and would be a potentially better root conditioning agent.
