Application of Free Flap Transfers for Head and Neck Reconstruction

Objective To analyze the value of free flap transfers in head and neck reconstruction.Methods Thirty free flap transfers performed in 29 patients with head and neck defect during the period from October 2005 to December 2007 were reviewed.Analyses concerning the surgeries included defect description and site, flap type, recipient vessel and complications performed. Results There were 17 free radial arm flaps, 12 free fibular flaps and 1 free latissimus dorsi flap in this series. The overall success rate of free flap was 100%, the vessel thrombosis rate was 3.3%, and the salvage rate was 100%. Conclusion Free flap transfer in patients for head and neck reconstruction is safe and reliable.
