Calculation of the Lightning Induced Voltages on Power Distribution Line

In order to improve the safety and reliability of distribution lines and to provide valuable reference for lightning protection design,the electromagnetic field generated by the lightning return stroke was calculated based on the adjusted transmission line model.The horizontal electric field was calculated by using the Cooray-Rubinstein formula and in consideration of earth soil loss.Meanwhile,the coupling model proposed by Agrawal and finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method were used to calculate the Lightning induced voltages on 10 kV three-phases overhead power distribution lines due to the nearby lightning,which considered the ground conductivity in computation of the impedance of transmission line.The numerical method was verified by comparing with a reference.For an actual 10 kV distribution line,the lightning induced voltages on two kinds of line structure which were triangular wiring and aligned wiring were calculated,respectively,and the influences of ground loss and existence of other wires on the peak value and waveform of the induced voltage at line termination were analyzed.The result shows that the theory and calculation method can be used in lightning protection designs.
