A New Process for Amphoteric Tapioca Starch Production with Carboxyl Group Used in Wet End

A new process for amphoteric tapioca starch production with carboxyl group was proposed,which was implemented by cross-linking and oxidation reactions.This new process was accomplished with only wet line,while the traditional amphoteric starch process in abroad was performed with both the wet and dry lines.The amphoteric starch quality produced with the new process was basically identical with the famous brand Cato 3210,of a Starch Chemical Company.The 50℃viscosity of 6%(w/w)cooked starch reached 258BU which well matched with that of Cato 3210.And the degrees of substitution (DS) of earboxyl group and quaternary ammonium group reached 0.016 and 0.032,respectively,which also fall within the quality control range of Cato 3210.This amphoteric starch can increase the paper tensile strength by 14.04% ,7.37% and 9.91% respectively for three kinds of differ- ent samples in comparison with the blank ones and has good performance in ash retention.
