STUDY ON QUATERNARY CATIONIC AMPHIPHILIC WATER SOLUBLE POLYELECTROLYE Ⅱ.THE QUATERNARY CATIONIC MODIFICATION OF POLY(STYRENE ACRYLAMIDE)

Quaternary cationic amphiphilic water soluble polyelectrolytes have been a focus of polyelectrolytes recently, because they are finding increasing applications in the field of treatment of waste water as flocculant, textile dying and finish as mordants, papermaking as strength additives, drainge and retention aids, cosmetics, biomedicine and pharmaceuticals. In order to improve the dyeability and fixation strength of active dye in the process of cellulose fiber dying and finish, amphiphilic cationic polyelectrolyte as mordant is an effective approach to dissolve the problem. Hydrophobic styrene(St) and hydrophilic acrylamide(Am) were copolymerized to obtained poly(styrene acrylamide), as precursor polymer to chemical modification. Via transamination reaction, N,N dimethylpropanediamine reacted with poly(St Am) in ethylene glycol produce poly(styrene N′ acrylamido N,N dimethylpropanediamine), then, this product reacted with dimethyl sulfate as a quaternizing agent, dimethyl sulfate quaternized cationic poly(styrene acrylamide) was obtained. The chemical structures of poly(St Am) and dimethyl sulfate quaternized poly(St Am) were confirmed by IR and 1H NMR.
