SURFACE TREATMENT OF MICA BY A MACROMOLECULAR COUPLING AGENT

A macromolecular coupling agent was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) using styrene, n-butyl acrylate and γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy silane, and its molecular structure and mass can be controlled. The surface treatment of mica by this macromolecular coupling agent significantly improved the mechanical properties of mica filled polypropylene, which can be attributed to the enhancement of interfacial adhesion between mica and matrix indicated by SEM observations. Furthermore, the structure and property of the interface between mica and matrix can be modified by adjusting the molecular structure of the macromolecular coupling agent, thereby adjusting the mechanical properties of mica filled polypropylene, to a certain limited extend.
