INVERSE MICROEMULSION POLYMERIZATION OF ACRYLAMIDE AT HIGHER MONOMER CONCENTRATION

Inverse microemulsion polymerization of acrylamide has been carried out with Span 80 and OP-10 as the emulsifiers white oil as the continuous medium and bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxycarbonate as the initiator. The effects of monomer concentration, initiator concentration and emulsifier concentration on polymerization rate and polymer molecular weight at the range of higher monomer concentration were investigated. The orders with respect to monomer concentrations, initiator concentration and emulsifier concentration for polymerization rate are 2.24, 0.81 and 0.59 respectively, and for polymer molecular weight are 0.92, n and -0.37,respectively, n= 0.93 for = 2.57×10 -4 mol/L~ 5.14×10 -4 mol/L while n= -1.62 for = 5.14×10 -4~ 7.96×10 -4 mol/L. The main reasons for the higher order with respect to monomer concentration for polymerization rate might be the monomer taking part in the initiation process and the viscosity effect of the polymerizing areas. The result of molecular weight first increasing and then decreasing along with initiator concentration is thought to be concerned with the different termination mode at the different range of initiator concentration.
