Synthesis and Thermo-Sensitive Research of N-Isopropylacrylamide Copolymers

Temperature sensitive polymer,poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAAm) in aqueous solution has a lower critical solution temperature (LCST). In this work,two new temperature-sensitive polymers,poly(tetrahydrofurfulylacrylamide) (PTHFAA) and poly(tetrahydrofurfulylmethacraylamide) (PTHFMA) was synthesized,which are more hydrophilic and have higher lower critical solution temperature than PNIPAAm. THFAA or THFMA were also copolymerized with N-isopropyl acrylamide by radical copolymerization,respectively. The effect of composition of the copolymer on the LCST was studied. The results show that,by changing the mole ratio of monomer in copolymerization,the LCST of the copolymers can be effectively designed. The copolymers,P(NIPAAm-co-THFAA) and P (NIPAAm-co-THFMA) with different monomer molar ratios can achieve the aim to control the LCST.
