Thermal Response of Triblock Copolymers of N-Alkyl Substituted Acrylamides Prepared by RAFT Polymerization and Click Chemistry

Two kinds of triblock copolymers based on N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA),P(DMA32-b-NIPAM166-b-DMA32) (P(DND)) and P(NIPAM65-b-DMA30-b-NIPAM53) (P(NDN)) were prepared via combination reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with "click" chemistry. They had desired molecule weight and narrow molecule weight dispersion. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of P(NDN),P(DND) is 33 ℃ and 40 ℃ respectively. We used atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique to characterize the aggregation morphology of triblock copolymers in aqueous solutions. P(DND) formed spherical micelles with the diameter 20 nm~40 nm at 15 ℃ and 400 nm~800 nm at 45 ℃. While P(NDN) formed larger micelles with 160 nm~200 nm diameters at 15 ℃. At 45 ℃ these micelles assembled together to form large aggregates with diameter 1 μm~2 μm.
