Progress in the Chemical Modification of Curdlan,a β-(1→3)-D-Glucan

Curdlan is a natural linear microbial polysaccharide possessing unique gelling properties and important applications in food and pharmaceutical fields. The chemical modification of has become one of the most important research aspects on curdlan. The water insolubility of curdlan significantly limits its practical application. Several common methods such as sulfated and carboxymethylated modification etc. have been applied on curdlan. These methods not only enhance the water solubility of curdlan,but also endow curdlan with more bioactivities. The present paper gives a summarization of recent progress in chemical modification of curdlan with emphasis on hydrolysis of the main chain,sulfation,carboxymethylation,and hydrophobic modification. The application of a new selective modification method-"Click Chemistry" on selective modification of curdlan is also introduced.
