WANG Jie-dan(College English Department,Guizhou University,Guiyang 550003 China)
Transfer is an important term used in interlanguage pragmatics and second language acquisition. This article reviewed the related literature on transfer studies in second language acquisition and linguistic studies. It also looked into those overlapping and divergent uses of "Qing" in Chinese and "Please" in English, arguing that the convergent and divergent uses of the word actually reflected certain linguistic constraints and social values underlying linguistic expressions. It was concluded in this article that these were also main factors responsible for a learner's negative pragmatic transfer.
