Rational Development and Utilization of Water Resources in Arid Areas in Northwest China

The arid areas of Northwest China, are characterized by plentv of landresource and less water resource.Thereby the rational development andutilization of water resource become more important.The following aspectsmust be taken into consideration while developing the water resources in aridareas in Northwest China: 1) to take each river valley or basin as anecological unit to rehabilitate; 2) to take a consideration of both the upperand lower reaches as a wohle complex for water distribution; 3) todetermine the irrigated land acreage according to the water levels; 4) toconsider the cropping scale and cereal species on the basis of the seasonaldistribution of water; 5) to give an integrated management on the surfacerunoff and groundwater; 6) to combine the economic benifits with theecological results; 7) to pay more attention on the developmental potentialof water resources; 8) to study the feedback and its interaction betweenthe development process and the environment.
