Key Issues in Design of Basic Database for the Tarim River Watershed

The study area, the Tarim River Watershed, is the largest continental watershed in China, it includes the watersheds of its mainstream and four main tributaries, i.e., the Aksu River, Hotan River, Yarkant River and Kaidu-Kongque River, and the Tarim River flows through the northern marginal zone of the Taklimakan Desert in Xinjiang. In the watershed the ecological environment is extremely vulnerable, and the ecological environment problems resulted in by some natural factors and the economic development in the watershed have been paid a great attention to by both domestic and foreign scholars. In this paper, the geo-spatial database is developed according to the actuality and the future development requirements in the Tarim River Watershed after deriving the basic spatial data, remote sensing images and attribute data by using the technologies of GIS, GPS, RS, etc. Then, this paper also discusses some key issues about data deriving, technological methods, data organization, coding design, index development, data input, etc. based on the data warehouse management technology, i.e., the theory of the integrative spatial and attribute data, and the seamless integration of multi-source data, and C/S-based structure and the three-hierarchy RDS. The seamless integration and unified management of various multi-scale and multi-type spatial and attribute data are achieved. These have the very import theoretical and practical significances for carrying out the optimized redistribution of water resources and applied study of ecological environment.
