Advances in Water Harvesting Technology for Agriculture and Forestry in the World

Wang Keqin Meng Jingling(Beijing Forest University,Beijing,100083)  
This paper deals with research results in water harvesting technology both at home and abroad during the past two decades.More than 60 papers indicate that there are over 20 countries which are carrying out studies of water harvesting technology and its extension and utilization in recent years.Water harvesting system doesn′t include the large scale water diverting engineerings and the large scale reservoir engineerings,which is,generally,divided into two groups micro water harvesting system,and farm runoff harvesting system.Micro water harvesting system is suitable for the developing countries while the farm runoff harvesting system is more suitable for rational distribution and utilization of land surface runoff as well as the irrigated areas.Various kinds of new theories and methods of mathematical models,remote sensing technology and computer technology are used in water harvesting engineering designs.Also,various kinds of chemical materials are used to treat the surfaces of water harvesting systems,catchment areas and water storage pools thereby greatlyimproving the runoff efficiency and raising the construction of water harvesting system.Much attention is paid to water harvesting efficiency and water use efficiency which will hold the broad utilization future in the arid and semiarid areas.
