Dynamic Relationship of Function and Growth between Winter Wheat Root and Shoot under Different Soil Water Conditions

The pot experiments were conducted to study root shoot relationships of winter wheat under 7 different soil water regimes at the experiment area of China Agricultural University during 1993~1994. The results of the experiments led to the following conclusions: There existed a positive correlation between root and shoot growth before reaching maximal root biomass at heading stage,then turned to be a negative correlation because of root decay. When soil water content is constant and over 60% of the field capacity (PC), there was favorable spiral between the function and growth of root and shoot, otherwise, it would turn to be vicious spiral, which can be improved greatly by rewatering after water deficits. The more amount of soil water, the better root and shoot growth. Under soil water stress conditions, the amount of dry matter accumulated in root ,and the R/S increases. Compensative growth of root and shoot was more evident , R/S decreased, and seed yield increased if rewatering at booting stage after water stress. The root growth reached its peak at the 197th d at heading stage, and then began to decline. The more serious the water stress , the quicker the root system declined. Soil water content, which remains 60%~70% of FC before booting stage, then 80% FC, may be the favorable to winter wheat.
