Some Problems and Their Scientific and Technological Countermeasures for Sustainable Development of Cotton Production in Xinjiang

TIAN Changyan (Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Urumqi 830011, China)  
The total yield of cotton in Xinjiang occupies 36% of the total in China at present, and Xinjiang has been the largest production base of cotton in China. Undoubtedly, the sustainable development of cotton in China is depended on the cotton production in Xinjiang. Cotton production in Xinjiang has been greatly developed because of the rejuvenescence of varieties, applying of chemical fertilizer, use of plastic film for covering young plants, spread of advanced cultivation models, etc. However, some problems, such as simplistic fibre types and poor quality of cotton, reduction of economic returns of cotton growing, deterioration of the ecological conditions in the cotton production areas, backward irrigation technique, reduction of the synthetical fertility of soil in cotton field, and incompletion of farming machinery, exist in sustainable development of cotton production in Xinjiang. Aiming at these problems, some countermeasures and suggestions are put forward so as to promote the sustainable development of cotton production in Xinjiang.
