Both of the Hengduan Mts.Region and Qilian Mts.Region are the border montane ranges of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.Yet, the former is located on its subhumid southeastern border, with montane needle-leaved forests and alpine meadow as domimant vegetatien; while the latter on its semia- rid northeastern border, under the domonation of montane and alpine ste- ppes. Both them are characterized by vertical zonation.Yet, the former is more conspicuous and varied, with N-S aligned high mountains-deep gorges as dominant landscape; while the latter is essentially W-S trending high mo- untains interspersed with broad valleys. Agriculturally, both are featured by vertical productive systems, with farming in low valleys, forestry and animal husbandry on montane slopes under eternal snow on montane tops.Only in the Hengduan Mts.region the vertical spectra are more varied and forests are quite outstanding; while in Qilian Mts.Region forestry is rather insignificant. Each has a harsh ecolo- gical environment for agricultural development, but there are some diff- erentiations in major physical constraints.
