Study on Micron/Nanometer Ti(C,N) Based Cermet Tool Materials

The effect of adding nano-scale Alumna on mechanical properties and microstructure of micro-scale Ti(C,N) matrix cermet tool materials were investigated, which based on the mechanisms of grain improved fracture toughness. The results show that the mechanical properties of Ti(C,N) based cermet are greatly enhanced by adding nano-scale Alumna, especially the hardness and fracture toughness are improved significantly. The disadvantages of lower hardness and fracture toughness of Ti(C,N) ceramic cutting tool materials are eliminated. Through observing and analyzing the microstructure of the materials by SEM, it is considered that Ti(C,N) grains are fined by adding nano-scale Al2O3 particles, the main fracture mode of the material is transgranular fracture and the improvement of mechanical properties of the material is due to the transformation of fracture mode and refining of Ti(C,N) grains.
