Study on Cutting Performances for Cast Iron with Micron/nanometer Ti(C,N)-based Cermet Cutting Tools

Micron/nanometer Ti(C,N)-based cermet cutting tools were fabricated by hot-pressure sintering technology. An experiment of turning cast iron with three kinds of developed cermet tools (material numbers are JT1-JT3) and YG8 cemented carbide tool was carried out to investigate their cutting performances. The result indicates that the developed cermet tools are suitable for cutting cast iron, and they are superior to YG8 in cutting performance. Especially, the tool wear of JT2 is small and the machined surface quality is high. It can be concluded from the tool wear photograph that the main wear mechanism of Ti(C,N) tools is abrasive wear on tool flank.
