Supper alloy Inconel718 is one of the hardest machining materials because of its high melting point, low thermal conductivity and work-hardening at high temperatures.Rapid development in the aeronautic, astronautic and energy industry has raised the requirements for machining especially used in cutting. It has thus become more important to select the suitable cutting tools in machining applications. In this paper, several tools for cutting nickel-based alloys are introduced and they include high-speed steel, carbide, ceramics, and boron nitride. We focus our attention on carbide and ceramics, the effects of different coatings on the tool life and surface quality. In addition, common applications of high speed steels, ceramics, carbide and boron nitride tools are summarized.Useful references are provided with respect to cutting tools made of Inconel718.
