Effect of Cerium on As-Cast Microstructure of AZ61 Alloy

Zhou Haitao, Ma Chuenjiang, Wei Yinhong, Ding Wenjiang, Zhu Yanping (National Engineering Research Center of Light Alloys Net Forming, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai 200030)  
The effect of Ce on the as-cast microstructure of AZ61 alloy was studied with optical microscope, X-ray diffraction and electron microscope. The experiment results show that the microstructure of AZ61 was refined as a result of Ce addition. The morphology and value fraction of Mg17Al12 were decreased with Ce addition. Ce reacted with Al to form compound Al4Ce with high melt point in the form of rod-like and plate-like. Some Ce serrated on grain boundary. Ce increased the microhardness of AZ61, especially after solution treatment.
