Synthesis and characterization of titanium cross-linked montmorillonite

Titanium(from titanium tetrachloride) cross-linked montmorillonite was synthesized and investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and N_(2)-BET method.The(001) reflection was not recorded in the synthesized products,suggesting the loss of the regular layer stacking in the synthesized materials.This might result from delamination of clay layers and formation of "house of cards"structure.This explanation is in accordance with the result of the average pore diameter analysis,which indicates that the meso-pores are dominant with a minor of micro-pores in the synthesized materials.The thermal analysis demonstrates that these synthesized materials are thermally stable at 300~600 ℃ with a minor decrease of the specific surface area whereas the structure is destroyed above 700 ℃ with a significant decrease of the specific surface area.
