Investigation on Shape Memory Properties of Fe-Mn-Si Alloy with Carbon Addition

The shape memory properties of Fe-18. 1Mn-5. 5Si-0. 32C(wt % ) shape memory alloy has been investigated and compared with that of Fe-Mn-Si shape memory alloy. The results show that recovery ratio and recovery stress of the Fe-Mn-Si alloy have been remarkably improved by the addition of carbon. Carbon increases recoverable strain and recovery stress. The recoverable strain of Fe-Mn-Si-C alloy is greater than 5%. Carbon also delays the degradation of shape memory capability. Carbon strengthens the austenite by solution hardening. The strengthening of austenite prevents the permanent slip and favours the stress-induced γ- transformation and its reverse transformation. The orientation of stress-induced martensite in the alloy contained carbon is more uniform than that of Fe-Mn-Si alloy. This is beneficial to the shape memory effects.
