Spectrum absorption studies of γ-Fe_2O_3 nanoparticles

A Nd∶YAG pulsed laser(1064 nm in wavelength) was used to prepare γ-Fe_2O_3 nanoparticles in a special equipment in a flowing mixed gas flux of N_2/O_2 by laser ablation of a 0.5mm diameter iron wire.The structure and surface composition of the prepared nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,respectively.Spectra of γ-Fe_2O_3 nanoparticles with a mean particle size of 20nm were characterized with UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopy.Moreover,the absorption mechanism was investigated.The results show that γ-Fe_2O_3 nanoparticles have good optical absorbability in UV-vis and IR spectra in comparison with the ordinary γ-Fe_2O_3 powders,and the optical absorbance increases with the content of γ-Fe_2O_3 nanoparticles in UV-vis and IR spectra,respectively.
