Study on preparation and curing of urea-formaldehyde resin microcapsule for electrophoretic ink

Microcapsule for electrophoretic ink display was prepared by in situ polymerization of urea-formaldehyde(UF) resin via an improved two-step approach.The effect of different system modifiers and curing approaches on the morphologies of microcapsules were compared,and the result shows NaCl,gelatin,and resorcin,as system modifiers,can effectively stimulate the assembly of resin onto the oil/water interface,resulting in smooth and compact surface of microcapsules.The shell thickness of microcapsules can be controlled via adjusting the acidizing time.While using NH4Cl as curing agent,controlling the reaction rate of urea and formaldehyde through the system temperature,microcapsules for electrophoretic display with a smooth surface and appropriate strength to resist collapse and damage during processing are obtained.
