The Stabilization of Deformed Stress-Induced ε Martensite and its Effect on Shape Memory Effect in an Fe-Mn-Si-Ni-Co Alloy

As the specimen of Fe-25.6Mn-5.1 Si-4.1Ni-1,8Co( wt%)shape memory alloy are pre-strained at一80℃,the recovery strains(ε_r)areincreased rapidly with increasing pre一strains(ε_t)atfirst, and then ε_r increases slowly as ε_t2.5%and atlast reaches a constant value as ε_t4.2%。Thereverse transformation temperature A_f rises all alongwith increasing pre一strains,while A_s is unaffectedby ε_t. On the microstructure analysis of the stress一induced ε martensite and its residual trace afterreverse transformation,it is revealed that,the stress-induced ε martensite is usually plastically deformedby intersecting each other and therefore becomesstabilized.This stabilization of stress-induced εmartensite is an important fact responsible for the lower recovery strains in the polycrystalline Fe-Mn-Si alloys. Finally, the characteristics of thisstabilization and possible ways to prevent it are alsodiscussed.
