Grafting of N-isopropylacrylamide(NIPAAM) onto sodium alginate has been carried out using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as a redox initiator in an aqueous medium. The optimized reaction conditions affording maximum percentage of grafting are determined by varying the concentrations of CAN, NIPAAM, and also temperature and time. The effects of these parameters on the percentage of grafting (G) and percentage of grafting effciency (G_E) have also been studied and the results are discussed. The temperature and pH sensitivity of different Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-grafted sodium alginate(SA-g-PNIPAAM) was also studied. The results show that the SA-g-PNIPAAM will be a novel temperature-sensitive/enteric functional biomaterial.
