Viscosifying Action of Hydrophobically Modified Water Soluble Polyelectrolytes: A Literature Review

Zhang Jian Zhang Liming Li Zhuomei (Institute of Polymer Science, Zhongshan University, Guangzhou 510275, China)  
Hydrophobically modified water soluble polyelectrolytes are a novel functional polymer material with molecular structures containing hydrophobic pendant chains or terminal group not more than 10mol%. They are of excellent viscosifying action in brine at certain temperature which can be used in various fields. The dependences of their viscosifying behavior on the following factors:molecular struture, polymer concentration,salt,shear stress,pH,temperature, surfactant, aging time and interaction with other hydrophobically modified water soluble polymers as well are reviewed.
