A Study on Main Characters of Maize on the Sloping Fields in the Northwest of Guizhou Province

WU Xue zhong, PAN Guo yuan, DENG Pei yan, WANG Xian li, LI Jian hua (Seed Company of Bijie Prefecture, Bijie, Guizhou 551700, China)  
The relationship of 19 main characters with yield of maize was studied by using the grey connected degree analysis. The data came from the maize hybrid test on sloping fields from 1998 to 1999 in Bijie. The results showed that the ideal maize characters in this area are moderate growing period, about 130-150 d, the relatively longger vegetative growth period, short filling period, short heading period, big and long ear, big and deep seeds, high thousand kernel weight, hard or semihard seed, thin spike stalk, more seed number in a row, good fertility at spike tip, and moderate plant height and ear height. Plant type should be compact, with raw stalk resistant to lodging and having resistance to banded sclerotial blight, head smut, leaf blight, leaf spot and stalk rot.
