frame superstructure is condensed into a spatial“super” element by adoptingsubstructure method, and the box foundation is substituted with a bending-stiffness equiva- lent elastic plate supported on finite-layed elastic soil or winkle soil.Energy variationlmethod is eamployed to establish the mathematical model for the spatial interaction of theframe, soil, and box foundation. This model shows a clear- cut mechanical relationship a-mong the three parts and reasonably reflects the 3- D effect in their interaction. Besides, byusing condensing techniques, much cpmputational work is saved compared to other spatialanalysis method.
