Fracture behavior of SiC particulate reinforced aluminum matrix composites

By means of tensile and fracture toughness experiments of two notched specimens (4PB and 3PB) and metallographical observations and analysis of fracture surfaces and unloaded specimens, the fracture behavior of SiC particulate reinforced aluminum matrix composites are investigated. The results show that the main fracture process of the composites is the process of micro crack formation due to viscosity breaking of SiC/matrix interface and subsequent propagation of the microcracks into the matrix. Under the conditions of the same addition of SiC particles and T6 heat treatment, the composite with larger size of SiC particles has higher fracture strength and fracture toughness.
